# Smartlead vs Apollo for Cold Email: Compared (2026)

GenFlows Team · Oct 22, 2026, 4:36:01 PM · 8 min read

TL;DR

- **They do different jobs.** Apollo is mainly a contact database with light sequencing. Smartlead is sending infrastructure with no database of its own.
- **Smartlead lists $39 to $379 a month** ($32 to $315 on annual billing) and includes unlimited email accounts on every plan. Plans are limited by sends and stored contacts.
- **Apollo is priced per seat plus credits.** Secondary sources put paid plans at $49 to $119 per user per month on annual billing *(directional)*, and its homepage claims 240M contacts.
- **For volume, pick Smartlead. For finding contacts, pick Apollo.** Many outbound teams use both: Apollo or Clay for targeting, Smartlead for sending.
- **Neither has a native Close CRM connector that we could find.** Plan on webhooks, the API or Zapier.

“Smartlead vs Apollo” is a slightly odd comparison, because the two tools overlap only in the middle. Apollo helps you find prospects and can send sequences. Smartlead sends cold email at scale across many mailboxes but does not sell you leads. The useful question is which one you need first, and whether you need both.

We have already covered each tool's cost in our [Smartlead pricing](https://www.genflows.com/blog/smartlead-pricing-2026) and [Apollo.io pricing](https://www.genflows.com/blog/apollo-io-pricing-2026) guides. This post puts them side by side for cold email specifically.

*Sourcing note: Smartlead prices and limits were read on its own pricing page and API docs in October 2026. Apollo's pricing table did not render for us, so Apollo plan prices, credits, mailbox and sending limits come from secondary sources and help-center summaries and are marked (directional). Confirm everything on the live pages before buying.*

## The Short Answer

Choose Smartlead if you already have a list (or build one in Clay) and need to send from many mailboxes without per-mailbox fees. Choose Apollo if you need to find and enrich contacts first, run modest volume from a few mailboxes, and want one login for data and outreach. If you send seriously and also need data, the two are complementary rather than rivals.

## Side-by-Side Comparison

| Feature | Smartlead | Apollo |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Core job** | Sending infrastructure | Contact data plus light sequencing |
| **Entry price** | $39/mo ($32 annual) | Free tier; Basic $49 annual or $59 monthly *(directional)* |
| **Scale tier** | Pro $94/mo ($78 annual) | Professional $79 annual or $99 monthly *(directional)* |
| **Pricing basis** | Monthly sends and stored contacts | Per seat plus pooled credits |
| **Mailboxes** | Unlimited email accounts on all plans | Basic 1 per user; Professional unlimited Google/Microsoft plus 5 SMTP *(directional)* |
| **Contact database** | None; bring your own leads | Claims 240M contacts and 30M companies |
| **Deliverability tooling** | SmartDelivery add-on, $49 to $599/mo | Domain warming, inbox rotation and monitoring listed on homepage |
| **Agency features** | White-label at $29 per client workspace | Built for in-house teams, not agencies |
| **Webhooks** | Documented (sent, opened, clicked, replied, bounced, unsubscribed) | Not verified |
| **HubSpot** | One-way push reported *(directional)* | Integration exists; see our guide |
| **Close CRM** | No native connector found | No native connector found |

## What Each Tool Is Actually For

### Apollo: find the people, then reach them

Apollo's homepage advertises 240M contacts and 30M companies, a free signup with no credit card, a parallel dialer and sequences. Credits are pooled across a team, reset each billing cycle and do not roll over. If your problem is “who should we email?”, Apollo answers it in the same tool that sends the email.

### Smartlead: send a lot without per-mailbox fees

Smartlead's FAQ states that all plans include unlimited email accounts at no extra cost. You pay for monthly sends and for stored contacts instead. That pricing shape suits teams running dozens of mailboxes across many domains, which is how most serious cold email programs protect their sender reputation. See [how many domains and mailboxes you need](https://www.genflows.com/blog/how-many-domains-mailboxes-cold-email-2026) and our guide to [domain and mailbox rotation](https://www.genflows.com/blog/cold-email-domain-mailbox-rotation-2026).

## Pricing: Sends and Contacts vs Seats and Credits

Smartlead lists four plans, on monthly billing with a 17% discount for annual:

| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Sends per month | Contacts |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Base | $39 | $32 | 6,000 | 2,000 |
| Pro | $94 | $78 | 90,000 | 30,000 |
| Unlimited Smart | $174 | $144 | 150,000 | Not stated |
| Unlimited Prime | $379 | $315 | 500,000 | Not stated |

A “contact” here is a unique prospect email stored in the account, counted against the plan limit. It is not a lead you buy from Smartlead. Add-ons cost extra: SmartDelivery runs from $49 to $599 a month, and white-label client workspaces are $29 each per month (Unlimited Prime includes three).

Apollo bills per user. Secondary sources put Basic at $49 (annual) or $59 (monthly), Professional at $79 or $99, and Organization at $119 or $149 with a reported three-seat minimum *(directional)*. Apollo's own page text listed “Custom” where we expected an Organization tier, so check the current plan names. Credit counts differ between sources, so we are not quoting them.

**The real cost is the stack, not the tool.** Either way you still pay for domains, mailboxes, warmup or deliverability monitoring, and email verification. Budget for those before comparing sticker prices. Our [cost per meeting](https://www.genflows.com/blog/cold-email-cost-per-meeting-budget-2026) guide shows how they add up.

## Sending Limits and Deliverability

This is where the two tools diverge most. Apollo's help-center guidance, as summarized in search results, suggests starting around 50 emails a day per mailbox, staying in the 50 to 100 a day range, and adding mailboxes rather than raising limits *(directional)*. Apollo-purchased mailboxes are reportedly capped at 200 per 24 hours *(directional)*. That is sensible deliverability advice, but it makes Apollo a better fit for moderate volume.

Smartlead is designed around the opposite approach: many mailboxes, each sending a little. Its Pro plan lists 90,000 sends a month, which is the scale most Apollo seats are not built to carry. Whichever you use, watch reputation continuously. Our [deliverability monitoring guide](https://www.genflows.com/blog/cold-email-deliverability-monitoring-2026) covers what to track.

**Not verified:** which Smartlead plans include the warmup pool and API access, and Apollo's own deliverability claims in practice. We left both out rather than guess.

## CRM Fit: HubSpot and Close

For HubSpot, a third-party guide describes a native but one-directional Smartlead push, with two-way sync needing a webhook or Zapier *(directional)*. Smartlead's official webhook docs list sent, opened, clicked, replied, bounced and unsubscribed events, scoped to a user, client or campaign, and disable a webhook after five failed deliveries. For Apollo, see our [Apollo HubSpot integration](https://www.genflows.com/blog/apollo-hubspot-integration-2026) and [Smartlead HubSpot integration](https://www.genflows.com/blog/smartlead-hubspot-integration-2026) guides.

For Close, we found no native connector for either tool. The common pattern is to push replies into Close through webhooks, the API or Zapier. We cover that in [Close CRM and cold email integration](https://www.genflows.com/blog/close-crm-cold-email-integration-2026).

## Using Them Together

A common setup is to build and enrich the list in Apollo or Clay, verify it, then load it into Smartlead for sending. That keeps data cost and sending cost separate, and lets you scale mailboxes without buying more data seats. If you use Clay for enrichment, see [pushing Clay leads into Smartlead](https://www.genflows.com/blog/clay-smartlead-integration-push-leads-2026). This is a reasonable pattern rather than a vendor-endorsed standard.

## Which Should You Choose?

| If you... | Choose |
| --- | --- |
| Have no list yet and send under a few thousand emails a month | Apollo |
| Already have data and want many mailboxes and domains | Smartlead |
| Run outbound for clients | Smartlead (white-label) |
| Need both data and high-volume sending | Both, or Clay plus Smartlead |

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is Apollo or Smartlead better for cold email?

They do different jobs. Apollo finds and enriches contacts and can send sequences. Smartlead sends cold email at volume across many mailboxes but has no contact database. For high-volume sending Smartlead is the stronger fit, and for finding prospects Apollo is.

### Can I use Apollo and Smartlead together?

Yes. A common pattern is to source and enrich contacts in Apollo or Clay, verify the emails, then send from Smartlead. This is a practical pairing, not an officially documented workflow.

### Does Apollo send cold email?

Yes, through sequences linked to your own mailboxes. Help-center guidance recommends conservative per-mailbox limits *(directional)*, so it suits moderate volume better than large multi-domain programs.

### Does Smartlead include leads?

No. Smartlead has no built-in contact database. Its plans limit the number of contacts you can store and the emails you can send per month, so you bring your own list.

### How much do Smartlead and Apollo cost?

Smartlead lists $39 to $379 a month ($32 to $315 on annual billing). Apollo's paid plans run roughly $49 to $119 per user per month on annual billing according to secondary sources *(directional)*. Domains, mailboxes and verification cost extra with either tool.

### Do they integrate with HubSpot and Close?

Smartlead has documented webhooks and a reported one-way HubSpot push *(directional)*. We found no native Close connector for either tool, so plan on the API, webhooks or Zapier for Close.
